Case Study 204: Dramatic Healing and Changes Seen After Implementing EFT Tapping (EFT): Disgust
Presenting Issue
The client, a 40-year-old individual, presented with intense feelings of disgust and aversion, experienced as a strong emotional and physical reaction toward certain people, memories, behaviours, or aspects of self. Disgust manifested as nausea, a tight throat, facial tension, and an overwhelming urge to withdraw or reject.
This emotion significantly affected:
-
Intimate and social relationships (avoidance, emotional shutdown)
-
Self-image and self-acceptance (self-disgust and shame)
-
Emotional regulation (sudden spikes of emotional distress)
-
Physical comfort (stomach discomfort, gag reflex, tension)
Disgust was experienced as automatic, powerful, and difficult to control.
Underlying Emotional Drivers
Therapeutic exploration revealed that disgust was linked to:
-
Boundary violations or experiences perceived as contaminating
-
Unresolved shame or humiliation
-
Moral injury or betrayal
-
Internalised beliefs: “This is wrong,” “I am tainted,” or “I must reject this to stay safe.”
-
Suppressed anger and fear redirected into aversion
Disgust functioned as a protective response, attempting to create emotional distance from perceived threat or contamination.
EFT Tapping Intervention
EFT Tapping was introduced to safely process disgust responses stored in both the emotional memory and the body.
Session Focus
-
Normalising disgust as a protective emotion
-
Identifying specific triggers (memories, people, bodily sensations, self-directed thoughts)
-
Locating disgust in the body (throat tightness, stomach nausea, facial tension)
-
Measuring intensity (initially rated at 8–9/10)
-
Tapping through EFT points while voicing:
-
The visceral reaction of disgust
-
Associated memories and images
-
Self-directed disgust and shame
-
-
Gradual introduction of safety, choice, and self-acceptance
Sessions were paced gently to prevent overwhelm.
Immediate Results
During the first EFT session, the client experienced:
-
A reduction in intensity from 9/10 to 4/10
-
Decreased nausea and throat constriction
-
A surprising sense of emotional neutrality
-
Increased tolerance for recalling triggering material without aversion
The client reported feeling more in control of their emotional responses.
Ongoing Changes Observed
After four to six EFT sessions and ongoing self-tapping:
-
Significant reduction in disgust reactions
-
Improved ability to remain present without withdrawal
-
Decreased self-directed disgust and shame
-
Healthier emotional boundaries without aversion
-
Improved intimacy and self-acceptance
-
Reduced physical stress responses
The client shared:
“I can look at what used to repulse me without shutting down. It doesn’t define me anymore.”
Emotional & Psychological Shifts
Key transformations included:
-
Disgust shifting from repulsion to discernment
-
Healing of shame and internalised contamination beliefs
-
Increased emotional integration and self-respect
-
Restoration of nervous system balance
-
Greater emotional maturity and resilience
Conclusion
This case study demonstrates how EFT Tapping can bring about dramatic healing of disgust by addressing the deep somatic and emotional layers associated with aversion, shame, and boundary violation.
EFT allowed the client to process disgust safely, release its charge, and replace it with emotional clarity, choice, and self-compassion.
EFT proved to be a powerful and respectful therapeutic approach for transforming disgust into emotional understanding and healthy boundaries.
